Of Being Tired or Retired

I recently retired from work after 33 years of gainful employment.  It is a nice feeling to be able to look back and feel a sense of accomplishment, satisfaction and gratification.

Over the last 20 years, I had been an Ambassador's secretary.  During this period, I served 4 Ambassadors, worked alongside 9 official Diplomatic Officers of various ranks.  We had 3 Presidential visits (1996/1997/1998)  from the former President Alberto Fujimori.  Some embassies have never even had one Presidential visit and I count myself fortunate at having had three experiences.  It was hard work but I learnt a lot more than what you find in secretarial books!

From day one, it was always challenging and interesting.  There were dull moments but most of all, I remember the happy times and laughter.  My memory is fresh with the days of long elaborate lunches, the jokes, chats, talks, gossips and heart-felt sharing with colleagues.

All of this shaped me into the person that I am today.  Each Ambassador taught me something valuable.  My colleagues always shared tips and tricks from their previous postings.  All of them inspired me in one way or another.  I embraced the culture of the Peruvian people and, likewise, they did the same for our Malaysian and Asian way of life.

Do I miss it all?

No.

Or maybe not yet.

Or maybe never.

It is funny that people found it difficult to understand why I would want to leave a prestigious job, with a good salary and a great team of colleagues. It wasn't an overnight decision. I had given this a lot of thought and the seed was planted last July. Just like a premature baby, it bore fruit at 7 months.

I hadn't realised that I was tired of the work. Stimulating and diverse as it was, I found myself repeating tasks for the fourth time around. Although it was easier, the joy or pleasure I used to feel wasn't there anymore.

Although I became efficient at my work, I found myself more tired at the end of the day. Age has a part to play in it but I suspect that when the heart is no longer in it, the energy is drained faster.

So it was a choice between "being employed and being tired" or "being unemployed and being retired".

My retirement has everything to do with having done all my duties, paying for my own way and, now, to finally live for what really makes me happy.  A huge "thank you" to my husband for his support and love.

On 29 February 2012, I retired.  It's been three months already.

Until now, I have to pinch myself to believe that I have retired.

Until now, I am loving every second of it.

Of where I've been

It's a little annoying sometimes when people think that I am where I am today because of luck.  I am not a high-ranking official in any organisation or some big shot but I am successful in my own right.

How exactly did I get to be where I am today?  Let me share part of my journey.

When I left school after finishing my "O" levels, I was undecided about what to do.  In my family, education was not a priority.  If you wanted to go to school, you could and if you didn't, it wasn't a sin.  The fact that I even completed my secondary education is an achievement, of sorts.

I didn't know, then, what I wanted to do.  I gave tuition and earned some pocket money.  A neighbour told me to learn shorthand and typewriting because she said the skills would help me, no matter what I chose to do.  Thanks to her, I can touch type today.

This prompted me to check some colleges and I found out that the best was Goon Institution.  It would mean taking a bus to PJ from KL, four days a week to attend evening classes.  I was excited but tinged with some sadness that I couldn't be chauffeur-driven when I saw how packed the mini buses were.

My first class of typewriting was uneventful.  I joined a class of about 50 other students. No one looked up when I walked in.  Everybody seemed to know what to do.  I sat down and had my first lesson.  It would be the only time I would have someone watching over me.  My progress depended on me and on how much I wanted to do to get ahead.  It is a skill that is the most useful in today's cyberworld, I think.

For shorthand, the class was smaller.  There were about 30 of us.  I sat next to a girl, Assunta Menon.  She was the first baby born in Assunta hospital.  It was nice to be her shorthand buddy.

The teacher was running late.  Suddenly an old man, in the mould of George Burns, just about five feet in height, walks in and says he was going to teach us shorthand.  Oh my goodness!  An old man was going to teach us!!!!!!!!  My initial reaction was shock and disappointment.  I couldn't believe that they would designate a dinosaur, a tiny one at that, instead of some young and dynamic teacher.

*Knock my head here*.  The dinosaur turned out to be Mr Goon Koon Leong, the founder of Goon Institution.

(pic from here)
Come on, don't tell me the resemblance isn't uncanny!

After one lesson on Pitman's New Era Shorthand with the famous Mr K L Goon, I found that I loved it.  There was something in the way he taught the subject.  He passed on that love of shorthand and teaching to me.  Often in class, I sat mesmerised at how he made such a difficult subject seem so interesting.  He motivated us and unreservedly gave us all the years of knowledge and experience he had.  I wasn't to know then that my class would be the last class that he would teach.  It was an honour to have been his student.

As I continued with my evening classes, I began to have a dream of teaching.  I didn't know what to do about it, or where I should go to or how to go about it.  I hatched a plan.  A simple plan and the first step towards the door of opportunity is all it took to get me going.

One evening, I went in earlier than usual and poked my head into the office of Mr K L Goon.  He was alone and I knocked on his door to get his attention.  He looked up and motioned for me to enter.

Our conversation went something like this

Me:  Good evening, Sir.
KLG:  Good evening.  What can I do for you?
Me:  I have some questions and hope you can give me some answers.
KLG:  Sit down.  What do you want to know?
Me:  I just wanted to tell you that I love shorthand and I can see myself teaching it one day.  Please could you let me know what I should do to start the ball rolling?

He smiled.  Looked at his fingernails and without looking at me, he carried on
KLG:  First, you have to pass your shorthand exams.
Me:  I know.  I will.
KLG:  What are you doing now?
Me:  I'm giving tuition on a part-time basis.
KLG:  Why aren't you working full-time?
Me:  I have no skills, no experience, no nothing.  No one will want to employ me.
KLG:  How old are you?
Me:  Almost 19. I'm 18 now.
KLG:  Okay, Come work here.
Me: Oh!
KLG:  Yes, You can start next week.

And just like that, I got my first real job as a clerk earning RM170.00 a month.  Three months later, I had a RM20.00 increment and I felt like I was on top of the world.  This was in 1978 and it was enough for me to survive.

Several months after that, I was told that the son of K. L. Goon needed a clerk cum secretary.  Apparently, they had decided that I would fill that position.  It was going to be in another branch and he had a tough reputation: he was a taskmaster and I was really worried that I would not measure up to his standards.

In some way, I saw it as another door of opportunity and I walked into it, hesitantly but confidently.  My motto was "Give your best and do your best".  Goon Kok Chee or K. C. Goon turned out to be a great mentor for me.  He taught me many skills and gave me a platform from which to develop all the potential he saw in me.

I had not yet any formal certificates but I was happy and contented.  I had a great boss and learning so much every day with a salary that was enough for all my expenses.

One day, K L Goon visited the office where I was working and he asked me if everything was doing okay.  I said I was happy that he had confidence in my abilities.  He urged me to take up the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) Private Secretary's Certificate (PSC) examinations. I laughed and said that the classes were ongoing and there was no way I could join them. He insisted that I had to join in the next intake.  He assured me that I could take the entire course without paying for anything except the exam fees.  There was no way I could turn down the offer.  The entire cost would be about RM1500.00 without the examination fees.  On my own, I would never have been able to afford it.  It was the third door of opportunity that I walked through.

In January of 1980, I enrolled for 18 months of night school while working full-time to chase after what was a much-coveted piece of paper.

In the midst of the one and a half years, K L Goon also 'forced' me to attend one of the Malaysian Institute of Management (MIM) programs called "The Effective Secretary".  This was an absolute drop-from- heaven kind of gift for me.  The syllabus covered aspects of secretarial work that the LCCI PSC didn't cover.  Of the six of us who attended, only two passed with a distinction.  I was one of them.  I was the youngest in the group and I felt a strong sense of gratitude and pride.  I have, in turn, paid it forward and helped others to better themselves when I had the opportunity, exactly as K L Goon and K C Goon had done for me.

My greatest achievement was passing the LCCI single subject Shorthand 100 words per minute examination in 1981 and getting the First place in Malaysia.  It is, for me, the most important milestone in my life.  It sealed my place in my own personal history as the highest recognition of my hard work.  I received a Silver Medal from LCCI.  Often when I am spring-cleaning, I chance upon this medal and it always stops me in my tracks to see how far I am come since then.

In 1981, I sat for the final examinations and while I was relatively confident of passing, I harboured a tiny fear that I would disappoint, not only myself, but also K L Goon and K C Goon who had faith in me and opened up doors that allowed me to grow professionally.

In the end, I got through in the first attempt and I am a qualified Private Secretary with a certificate from the famous and renowned London Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

To my benefactors, lecturers and supporters who helped me along that path, I thank you for a debt I cannot repay.

I hope that emulating kindness and generosity to others, will in some small way, be a tribute to them.

Of Facebook, Farmville and Friends

Recently, there was a rumour that Facebook was going to end on March 15.  Many thought it was real.  While some heralded it as the best news ever, others moaned and groaned.  Just as quickly as the news spread, it was quashed.

FACEBOOK
I know that many see Facebook as something evil, which eats away at proper socialising and swallows up the precious minutes from the 24 hours that we all get.  I see it as a great platform with which we can keep in touch with people, albeit in a virtual world.  Before Facebook, I lost touch with my family members.  The only time I met up with them was at a wedding or funeral.  On Facebook, I can see what each one is doing, where they are going, what they are up to and more.  I can "poke" them, comment on their status, send flowers or hugs, share pictures and the list goes on.  I've found relatives that I never knew I had before.  There's something to be said about being connected but having control over the distance.  The choice of being active or passive is in one's hands.

FARMVILLE
I play two games on Facebook.  One is Scrabble and the other is Farmville.  Yes, Farmville is a love it or hate it application.  I didn't know it would be so interesting until  I helped my son with his farm.  Then Stephen created one for me.  With that, I was hooked.  For the younger generation, I'd recommend it, instead of those games where you shoot and kill to gain points.  In Farmville, I notice that everyone helps each other happily and willingly.  I don't know of any other game where your competitors are so kind and helpful.  This refreshes my faith in humanity.  Again, for the younger generation, you will hone your skills for time management and business sense.  You have to plan and organise your farm for optimum performance.  In addition to all these advantages, you'll make friends with people who have the qualities that really count in life.

OLD FRIENDS
The friends that I had long forgotten and almost given up on of ever finding again have reappeared in my life.  The girls that I studied with and who were an integral part of my growing years are now back. Playing catch up with them is really wonderful.

Then there are the students who are now married and who have kids of their own, I feel like a grandmother already.  When I am sad, I only have to say so on Facebook and I am immediately comforted by words or virtual gifts.  Who needs real stuff when the spirit in which the virtual gift is given is what makes it so valuable and counts so much.

NEW FRIENDS
Then there are the new friends.  They say "Make new friends, think of the old.  New is silver and old is gold". It's not true.  I have some new friends who I would classify as "gold".  Without Facebook, I wouldn't have had the possibility of ever knowing them.

So yeah, I love Facebook, Farmville and my friends.

Life is so good and I am content.

A hair wash, massage and blowdry

I don't know about other hair salons but the one I regularly go to, gives about 20 minutes of massage, in between washing your hair.  I just came back from visiting my favourite salon and timed each session.
15 minutes shampoo and head massage with light scratching
25 minutes massage (neck, back and upper arms)
10 minutes shampoo and head massage again
5 minutes hair rinsing and conditioning
10 minutes blowdry (my hair is medium length)

Cost:  RM21.00 (includes some extra conditioning stuff)

That's dirt cheap, if you ask me.  However, I always tip the girl who attends to me.
Most times when the place is crowded, the massage may only take 20 minutes.  Today, I guess I got an extra 5 minutes because it wasn't full.

I've had my hair washed in many places, including in Singapore.  I have tried all the different salons in Toa Payoh.  Including the ones that I've been to here in Kuala Lumpur, none give this extra service.

Of course, the girls are not experts but they know enough to help you feel relaxed and I believe this is good for the blood circulation.  It's a quick fix for a hard day at work or home.

I feel rejuvenated now.  *big smile of satisfaction*

If only they had a manicure and pedicure on the side.  Well, can't have everything, I say!

So if you are interested, let me know and we can make a date.  They are closed over the Chinese New Year holidays and reopen on 6 February 2011.  P.S.  wear a loose teeshirt for better service!  LOL!

Lat tali lat tam pom

LAT TALI LAT TAM POM.  (Local version of the universal "Eeny, meeny, miny, moe")

I heard this on the radio recently.  Apparently, it's an "Old Town White Coffee" jingle.

I always thought it was "Lat Tali Lat Tam Pong".

I think there are many variations of this.  Depending on which state you are from.

My son says it's "Lat Tali Lat Tali Tam Plom".

His friend from Sabah says it's "Lai Lai Lee Lai Tam Plong".

Stephen says it's "Oh Bay Sohm".  *giggles*

I remember that, in my family, we used to have this extended one but I don't know where we got it from.

It goes like this

Lat Tali Lat Tam pong
Balik Kampong
Makan Kangkong
Masak Ikan Kembong
Beranak Dalam Tong
Keluar Anak Patong

Ahhhhhhh!  Childhood innocence.  Those were the days.

It looks like I wasn't the only one reminiscing.  Googled it and stumbled upon these fellow bloggers.

Of being happy, happier and happiest!

In general, I am a happy person.  I've learnt that being happy is a conscious decision.  Occasionally, I found that even when I was happy, something could come up to make me happier.

This is me with my "happy" face.

Yesterday, when I was killing time between sending and picking Jared up (okay! I was shopping!), I got a BBM from Stephen.  He said that he had received a handsome bonus.  Of course, whatever he gets, for me in Malaysia, is multplied by 2.3 at least.

So I get a beautiful bonus too!  Stephen is so sweet.  Along with the cash, came words for why I deserved it and that made me love him even more.

This is my "happier" face.

When am I happiest?  It's when I have moments that money cannot buy.  Too many to mention.  No picture could capture that face!

By the way, my grandpa would have been 101 today if he was alive.  I was always his favourite grandchild.  I miss him.  Happy Birthday, Pa!

#3 Of What Makes Me Smile

Some of you know that I lost my second son, Eric.  It was hard for me but it must have been worse for Jared since he lost his only brother.

I don’t know how it must have been for him.  Crippled by my own pain at that time, I couldn’t have realised that he, too, felt the awful void.

Anyway, there were good moments during those days that made me smile (for days on end).  This is one of them.

Many, many years ago, one of my cousins, after having 3 wonderful boys, conceived again and although, we were all hoping she would finally get a girl, she had another boy.  She asked me to be the godmother of that beautiful baby boy.  I agreed and I am so grateful to her for thinking of me.

After a gathering at her house in honour of my newborn godson, we were on our way home and we had this conversation in the car.

He:  Aunty L is so lucky to have 4 of them.
Me:  Yes.
He:  Maybe they can give us one.
He:  Maybe we can ask them since they have so many.
Me (laughing):  We can’t!  Those boys are her sons.
Me (trying to be serious): How would you like it if we had 4 and people ask us to give them one?
He:  But if she gives us one, she will still have 3 and we will have 2.
Me:  We cannot do that lah!  And don't you ask!!!!
He (not listening): We’ll ask for M______
Me:  Why him?
He:  He’s the same age as Eric.

If only life were as simple as that.  It’s a sad memory but it still makes me smile, always.

"X" marks the spot

I was on my way out this morning and saw this in the sky.  It caught my attention. When I reached the gate where my parents live, I jumped out of the car to take these 3 pictures.  My parents thought my pants was on fire!!!

My mom was sure that it was a natural phenomenon.  My dad said it was contrails.  Wikipedia says that Contrails (short for "condensation trails") or vapour trails are artificial clouds that are the visible trails of condensed water vapour made by the exhaust of aircraft engines.

Fortunately, I had my camera in my bag.  If you look carefully, you can see what looks like an inverted rainbow

They say "X" marks the spot.  Okay, we got that.  So what's the spot about?

Of memories

The popular lines are "The memories closest to my heart are those in which you have a part".  I think it is very true.  You can see this when people live their lives surrounded by all the things of their past.  Unconsciously, they cling to objects and photos because they cannot let go.

Here is a story I know of.  I wonder if anyone has a similar one!

I wonder, “are you over me yet?
Is it so hard for you to forget?

You told our friends you had enough
Kept quiet about your new found love

You spread stories about what I did
Yet  your infidelity you hid

The love had died so why pretend
You wanted life in that foreign land

So if the choice I made to leave
Works out for us, why do you grieve?

You have our pictures on your wall
You put our old stuff in your hall

Does he not mind that I am there
In his own house, does he not care?

Surrounded by old memories
how much of me you really miss

The dress you wore on your big day
Was real familiar, I should say

It made me smile to see that pic
A joke that somehow seems real sick

You reached behind into your past
Of what should only be just dust

I don’t know why you did just that
For you I did feel sort of sad

You should let go, give up your hope
That without you, I cannot cope

I have moved on and found a wife
I have real love, I have a life

I wish you well with your illusions
As well as all the fake allusions

That you are happy and just fine
Because I can see through that line

You say too much about everything
with non-stop pretence and acting

If you are happy, people will know
And I think that it will show

So clear your house of things with me
And you will really be quite free

You owe it to yourself and him
Or else your future is quite dim

So are you over me yet?
Clean up your house, then we bet

For until then, and I can tell
You see me there I know it well

I once was yours but now no more
And it is such a point so sore

That you settled for who you’re with
And make it seem it was your wish

I know better and so do you
Call your bluff, that I won’t do

Just hope that you get over me
Only then can you be free.

Of using online resources! (or a euphemism for stealing)

Yup, some people really make you feel like you are lacking when they appear to get everything done so effortlessly. Somehow, Bree Van de Kamp of Desperate Housewives comes to mind. Every strand of hair is in place, she cooks, bakes, does gardening and her house is spick and span.

If you browse online for stories about people who are organised, you may stumble upon this:

You're probably wondering how I got it all done so early, or maybe you've already decided I'm one of those crazy, completely over-organized women who get everything done ahead of schedule. Well let me assure you, that is not the case, at least not the crazy part.

I had a great reason for getting my shopping finished early, besides just seeing if I could do it. I wanted to be able to enjoy the holidays with my family just a little bit more.
Source! (Always give credit to the source when you use their work!)

Believe it or not, I was told that these lines were borrowed stolen from the link given and presented as if it were someone's original writing.  It set me thinking that some people like to create false impressions.

When someone can't write, that someone can actually take the trouble to surf the net to cut, copy and paste stuff from all over to pretend that it's original.  I was told there is a slew of this stuff which someone claims is her own writing or as she puts it "using online resources".

*Wags finger*  No, it's not!!!  It is certainly not using online resources when you give the impression that you wrote it yourself.  In fact, it's stealing other people's words and claiming them as your own.

I have been amused to be told that the majority of her so-called blogs (hidden inside FB, for obvious reasons) had consisted of words or paragraphs stolen or edited from online pages.

It is so easy to check.  All you have to do is copy a handful of those words, put them in inverted commas like this "The mood is peaceful and I although I have a lot on my mind, I am grateful for a productive day. It never quite seems to be a full enough day but I know that life has a way of always making us desire just a little bit more", and then paste them on any search engine like google.com.  Voila!  You will find the page or magazine that it was taken from and in this case, from here.

There were tons of stuff taken from all over the World Wide Web.  Some were wholesale copying and pasting. Some were edited and/or replaced with carefully selected words.  No mention was made of the source.  Incredible!  The deception runs thick and deep.

Unbelievably, she says integrity is her prized possession.

Does she not worry about being found out?  What do her friends think of this?  I have to believe they do not know.  So for how long does she intend to deceive them?

I think one of the reasons is that she can't stop because she's been basking in the lavish praises heaped upon her.  So she has to carry on with the sham.  This is why they say, "A lie takes care of the present but not the future".

More pertinently, the question would be, if this were your friend, what would your reaction be?  She isn't my friend and so I can just shrug my shoulders, giggle about it and laugh it off.

Nevertheless, what if he or she were my friend?  What would my reaction be?  Good question to think about.

I suppose I'd lose respect and trust for that person because telling a lie is one thing but perpetuating it is another.  I would also have to re-evaluate every single thing that person had said because once one's credibility is gone, one cannot recover it. Not 100 per cent anyway!

I may say all this now but I really don't know what my reaction would be if I found out something like this.  I really don't.

As far as I know, none of my blogger friends does this.  I guess it would be difficult to know why anyone would want to do it.

My friend ZR has a good explanation for "Why people do it?

He says, "There is a deep emptiness in the human psyche which the owner tries to fill by dumping second-hand or borrowed wisdom into it but like a castaway who drinks from the sea to quench his thirst, the more he drinks the more thirsty he becomes, the seeker who looks outside will never be fulfilled ...".

He goes on to say, "Not being able to fall back on their own resources, such people do gain satisfaction from basking in the shade (praise) of the works of others just like camp followers or fans like to stand close or be taken pictures of with celebrities partaking and enjoying in their reflected glory. This is innocent and healthy enough up to a point but beyond that it can get sick when you can only live in the shadow of other people, of belief systems, of super this, super that, without which you feel you are nothing, without self-worth, directionless ... people must regain their self-belief and trust their own minds, for better or worse, and not be dependent on constructed realities ...".

I find it amazing that someone with other natural talents would want need to put up a charade that she can also write!  There must be some deep-seated feeling of lacking.

Am I worried that she will chance upon my blog?  No, why should I?  It might do her good to know.  There is a remote chance that she doesn't even realise or think it's wrong.

What about her friends reading my blog?  Well, maybe they will see things differently after they read this.  Perhaps they will tell her that she needn't pretend to be what she's not and that she's acceptable just the way she is.

After all, not everyone can be Bree!

When the PM came a visitin'

Last Sunday, on 10.10.10, the Prime Minister of Malaysia came  to Taman Seri Sentosa for, what I believe to be, a Hari Raya Open House celebration.

Am I glad he came?  Yeah!

Traffic was a bit heavy, I saw a lot of people but it was too crowded for me.  So no detailed reporting because I wasn't at the Open House Celebration.

Oh, no wonder, the entire stretch of
Jalan Taman Seri Sentosa
has been retarred.  Yahoo!!!!!

It took them only two days to get it done.  Efficient heh!

I wonder if therein lies a hidden formula for when your area needs sprucing up!

Of being a friend

Recently, a string of emails made me think about what it means to be a friend. Not just a Facebook friend, but also a friend as defined by dictionaries as “a person attached to another by feelings of affection or personal regard”.

The dictionaries also describe a friend as (1) a person who gives assistance, (2) a person who is on good terms with another and (3) a person who is not hostile.

A friend is not only someone who gives assistance. Anybody who is not a friend can also do that.

A friend is not a person who is on good terms with you. It is much more than that.

A friend is a person who is not hostile. Not true. A friend can sometimes be argumentative.

I suppose it would really be a stretch of the imagination to think that a friend could be defined so easily.

In one email reply, I wrote, “a friend, who could stand me, would stand by me”. This really is true. We are not perfect beings. We hide behind different masks with our insecurities and our vulnerabilities. The one who can see beyond all that, and still accept us for who we are, is a friend.

I have many friends. In every aspect of my life, I’ve been blessed with good friends. Not just fair-weather friends but friends who have shown their love for me much more than I sometimes think I deserve.

From experience, I know that it isn’t the length of time, the quantity of moments when meeting up or the quality of each happy greeting.

A person become your friend when you dare to show your true self, warts, and all.

As I think of the people in my life, the ones who are my friends, I realise how wealthy I am.
