In the year 2009, a Malaysian was honoured to be one of the eight recipients for the 2009 Secretary of State's Award for International Women of Courage Awards.
In the ceremony, the United States Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton commented, "... Ambiga Sreenevasan, has a remarkable record of accomplishment in Malaysia. She has pursued judicial reform and good governance, she has stood up for religious tolerance, and she has been a resolute advocate of women’s equality and their full political participation. She is someone who is not only working in her own country, but whose influence is felt beyond the borders of Malaysia. And it is a great honor to recognize her and invite her to the podium."

I met Ambiga when she was freshly graduated and interning at a reputable law firm. We happened to be involved in the same theatre production, I recall (she was a keen amateur thespian for a while, until the demands of her profession and family life forced her to stop). Since those halcyon days when Malaysians were blissfully unaware of what the illegal firm of Mahathir & Daim was doing with our money, I haven't had a chance to bump into Ambiga. But I have been following her adventures as Bar Council president and, if anything, I thought she was overly mild and conciliatory during Pak Lah's tenure. I guess Mr Pink Lips has succeeded in bringing out the warrior spirit in all of us - bravo, Mr Pink Lips. Thanks for transforming Ambiga Sreenevasan into a larger-than-life action hero all decent Malaysians can be proud of!
I was at the Convent Bukit Nanas at the same time as Ambiga. Very dedicated and hardworking. She was someone who knew where she was going. She spoke and articulated well, so the legal profession was a dead cert. When she came back from England, she passed by when I was in Shearn and Delamore (KL)-society solicitors. Well done, a credit to the law profession.
i don't know ambiga, and i don't know how good she is personally. i would not judge her as a person, but i will judge her on what she does, and as a malaysian it is not pretty. ambiga is playing with a lot of racial fire lately. her recent effort on homosexuality in malaysia is a huge disrespectful to the muslim community where is the majority of the population (over 52%). any wise man or woman would never disrespect the very basic personality of a population. malaysia is a muslim country. she is creating racial chaos that must be stopped. all that we the malaysian wanted is peace and we have been doing that good since the 70s. we the the malays, chinese, indians and so many other from different backgrounds have been leaving in peace for years. but since the last general election, so suddenly things became fiery, and ambiga's work is one of the leading factor to it.
